NMA ELECTS NEW OFFICERS AND ADOPTS A SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT PRINCIPLES STATEMENT

The National Mining Association (NMA) at its Annual Meeting of Members and Board of Directors in Washington, DC today elected J. Brett Harvey, President and Chief Executive Officer of CONSOL Energy Inc., as Chairman of its Board of Directors. John S. Brinzo, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Cleveland-Cliffs Inc., was elected Vice-Chairman of the Board, and James F. Roberts, President and Chief Executive Officer of RAG American Coal Holding, Inc., was elected Chairman of the Audit and Finance committee.
"NMA is fortunate to have such recognized industry leaders as Brett Harvey, John Brinzo and Jim Roberts serve as its elected officers. We’re a stronger and better association because of their voluntary efforts and because of the participation of our entire board and membership," NMA President Jack Gerard said at the conclusion of today’s elections.
Upon his election, Mr. Harvey thanked and congratulated outgoing board chairman, Ronald C. Cambre, Chairman of Newmont Mining Corporation, for his outstanding contribution to NMA throughout the prior year in which NMA had successfully implemented a strategic reorganization of its staff and operations.
The NMA Board also adopted an NMA Sustainable Development Principles Statement that states, "the members of the National Mining Association pledge to conduct their activities in a manner that recognizes the needs of society and the needs for economic prosperity, national security and a healthy environment. Accordingly, we are committed to integrating social, environmental, and economic principles in our mining operations for exploration through development, operation, reclamation, closure and post closure activities, and in operations associated with preparing our products for further use."
NMA President Jack Gerard noted the Sustainable Development Principles Statement, "Is a statement that demonstrates the American mining industry believes in and practices excellent values from both an environmental and social perspective. It is a statement that shows our commitment—as an industry—to be proactive and to continue to conduct our operations in the best manner possible."
NMA is the national trade association of the U.S. mining industry including coal, metal and industrial mineral producers, mineral processors, equipment manufacturers, state associations, bulk transporters, engineering firms, consultants, financial institutions and other companies that supply goods and services to the mining industry.
