Washington - National Mining Association President and CEO Jack N. Gerard today presented Spirit of America certificates to six member companies that rushed early technical assistance, equipment and standby mine-rescue teams to help in last summer's successful rescue of miners from the Quecreek Mine in Pennsylvania.
Gerard made the presentation on behalf of the association at the conclusion of the annual Sentinels of Safety Awards Luncheon, which NMA co-sponsors with the Mine Safety and Health Administration of the Department of Labor.
He likened the spirit behind the volunteer assistance to that shown by other Americans on September 11th.
"Last week's anniversary observations…brought forth a great deal of thoughtful discussion on the heroism of the day and the feelings of kinship that drove it," Gerard said. "As I listened, I began to reflect on how deeply this same resolute spirit and get-it-done determination runs in this industry."
"For millions of Americans who watched on television," he went on, "the Quecreek rescue was a feat almost beyond comprehension, if not hope. To those in mining, it reflected the dedication, training and technical expertise that are hallmarks of today's modern mining industry.
"And the quick response of these companies to Quecreek reflected the industry's deep instinct to rally in times of need - the American Spirit," Gerard concluded.
Spirit of America Awards were presented to:
The awards cited the companies' "offering (of) aid and assistance in the successful and heroic rescue of nine Black Wolf Coal Company miners…(and) epitomizing the modern mining industry at its best and representing patriotism and the true 'Spirit of America.'"
