THE FOLLOWING IS A STATEMENT FROM JACK N. GERARD, PRESIDENT AND CEO OF THE NATIONAL MINING ASSOCIATION ON THE BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT'S ANNOUNCEMENT TO SEEK ADDITIONAL PUBLIC INPUT ON THE RECENTLY PROMULGATED SURFACE MINING (3809) REGULATIONS:

Washington -- "This action by the BLM demonstrates its pursuit of balance between the important goals of environmental protection and responsible development of our nation’s mineral resources.

"This process allows independent third-party organizations such as the National Academy of Sciences, lawmakers and all interested citizens the opportunity to comment on these rules, and provides BLM with accurate and scientifically-based information.

"The Bureau of Land Management has not rolled back any environmental protection. The rules promulgated on January 20, 2001, will remain in effect throughout a 45-day comment period.

"Impacts of the new 3809 rules were not adequately assessed before becoming effective in the final hours of the Clinton Administration. Americans should take comfort in knowing - finally - that their voices will be heard and their needs will be considered."

The U.S. mining industry produces coal, metals, building materials, and many other essential minerals that define the daily lives of 267 million Americans. The mining industry generates over $500 billion in total economic benefit each year and helps to sustain nearly 5 million U.S. jobs.
