THE FOLLOWING IS A STATEMENT FROM JACK N. GERARD, PRESIDENT AND CEO OF THE NATIONAL MINING ASSOCIATION ON THE HOUSE INTERIOR APPROPRIATIONS BILL AMENDMENT PROHIBITING THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION'S REVIEW OF THE HARDROCK MINING SURFACE MANAGEMENT (3809) RULES:

"Contrary to the misinformation surrounding this debate, an increasing number of public officials are coming to understand that today's modern mines sites are deeply committed to the environment.

"The mining industry continues its support of improved regulation and reform of the mining law, in addition to already complying with countless environmental laws and regulations, including the Clean Water Act, and numerous state laws and regulations protecting surface and ground water resources.

"We are confident when lawmakers become better acquainted with the facts surrounding this debate, they will agree -- as we have -- with the balanced and scientifically-based recommendations contained in the National Academy of Sciences Study.
"We know first-hand that responsible natural resources development and environmental protection can go hand in hand."

The U.S. mining industry produces coal, metals, building materials, and many other essential minerals that define the daily lives of 267 million Americans. The mining industry generates over $500 billion in total economic benefit each year and helps to sustain nearly 5 million U.S. jobs.
